While it’s a common belief that there’s no cure for diabetes, you may be surprised at how much you can do to get your blood sugar readings in the normal range and keep them there. While the cause of diabetes is essentially the body’s inability to regulate blood sugar levels, the condition also usually stems from many years of consuming foods high in sugar, which may be exacerbated by a genetic disposition to the disease. Surprisingly, most common condiments, including mayo, with which we dress the bun, are not ‘forbidden’ items. Pile on dark leafy greens, slices of onion and tomato and enjoy.

Lean meats, poultry and fish are on your ‘approved’ list of foods. Have a larger portion of meat than usual, make a big green salad and forget the baked potato. Make your meats more interesting and flavorful with marinades and salsas for a little spark that makes up for the buttered potato. Load up on fresh veggies, full of nutrients and fiber. Herbal seasonings provide extra flavor to veggies, helping you avoid that deprived feeling. Not only will you lose weight, you’ll feel full and satisfied at the end of the meal and your blood sugar levels will drop.

Daily exercise is another of your best friends in your quest for that cure for diabetes. Again, this shouldn’t be a dreaded experience. Choose a form of exercise you enjoy. This helps assure you’ll stick with it and realize all of the long term benefits.

Bone Marrow Transplant

Medical science and research has done a great deal to extend the lives that we live and also to improve the quality of our lives. There are many diseases and disorders from the past that no longer exist today because of the research and preventative measures that we are able to take against them. Many one time vaccines are able to protect us from crippling and deadly diseases that only a few years ago affected millions.

Along with preventative measures there are also surgeries and transplants that can be performed to prolong the lives of individuals with disease. Some of these procedures have been around long enough that we have lost the awe and wonder that should go along with the procedures. A dear friend of ours had to have bone marrow transplant. Her brother was a perfect match and was in good physical condition to under go the procedure. He was so excited to help his sister feel better that he gladly with stood the pain that goes with a bone marrow transplant.

The brother and sister checked into the medical facility together. They were in operating rooms next door to each other. The brother had the bone marrow extracted from his hip area. The marrow was then injected into his sister. This is a very simplified explanation of a very in-depth process. Both of them were hospitalized for several days and then had to wait for two weeks to have the preliminary results whether or not the bone more transplant was successful. Everyone that knows them waited impatiently for the results. This was the last procedure that was available to her to prolong her life. When the initial results came in the news was encouraging. Her blood count had risen and she reported feeling stronger. Her brother healed from the bone marrow transplant and was able to resume his normal activities. He is so hopeful that he had given his sister the gift of a longer life.

There are many other transplants that are available to people. Kidney transplants have become almost a routine procedure. Heart surgeries that used to be performed only in select hospitals across the country are now done daily in most hospitals that are equipped for surgery. Diagnostic testing is starting to resemble some of the procedures that were shown in Star Trek. Science and medicine are giving many people the chance for longer lives and improved living conditions. Most people that have experienced these life saving and life prolonging procedures have an awe for medicine and a strong faith in a higher power.

Abnormal Pap Smears

As a woman, you have different health concerns to think about than the men in your life. They have certain needs too, but you may find the things that you have to worry about as you get older to be a bit overwhelming. Women have more complex reproductive systems, as you can imagine, as women are the ones that birth children. If you follow your doctor’s advice, you will get your yearly pap smear as needed. At times, you may get what are called abnormal pap smears, but they are not usually a problem. However, that does not mean you do not have to follow up when this happens.

An pap smear is something that is done once a year, mostly to screen women for cervical cancer. This is done in a doctors office. The doctor will check for different physical signs of problems, and then take a cell sample from the cervix. At times, you may get abnormal pap smears and your doctor will call and ask that you come back in. In most cases, you are asked to fill a prescription and come back in for a recheck within a certain amount of weeks. Most of the time, this takes care of whatever was wrong. However, it some cases it could be that your abnormal pap smears indicate that you have irregular cells that could indicate cervical cancer.

What you do after you get abnormal pap smears is up to you, of course, but you should always follow the advice of your doctor when this happens. There is a chance everything will be fine and when you go in the next year for your yearly pap smear, there will be no sign of any problem. On the other hand, you may not be so lucky. Take your medications and then go in for the follow up. It might be a pain and it might mean you have to pay for another doctor’s visit, but the alternative with abnormal pap smears could mean cancer gets too far to be treated.

If you have daughters, you should make sure that you talk to them about abnormal pap smears and what they can mean. You should take them in for their first exam before they move away from home, even if they are not yet sexually active. This way they know what to expect and they have your guidance through what can be rather scary, even when nothing is wrong. That will make them more likely to have their exams each year when they do not have you to take them, and they will also be a bit more calmer if they get an abnormal pap smear.

There is one way to avoid abnormal pap smears, and that would be to get the shot that is supposed to help with some types of cervical cancer. Most teenage girls can get this shot. There are some warnings with it, however, with the most important warning being that it does not vaccinate against all types of cervical cancer. Getting the shot does not mean that a girl does not have to go in for a yearly exam once she is sexually active. She could still get an abnormal pap smear that she has to contend with. The shot helps, but is not complete with all types of cervical cancer making yearly exams still necessary.

What Causes High Cholesterol?

People now seem to understand that high cholesterol is a bad thing, and take steps to eliminate cholesterol. Sort of. The information about cholesterol can be hard to understand. It is complicated: there is good and bad cholesterol, and people don’t seem to understand what causes high cholesterol. There are a couple of things that causes high cholesterol, and hopefully, with a few of these tips, you can avoid food that causes high cholesterol, and enjoy a happier and healthier life.

Bad cholesterol sticks to the walls of your blood vessels (arteries) and make it difficult to pump blood throughout your body. When people speak with concern about what causes high cholesterol, they specifically mean what causes bad cholesterol.

Bad cholesterol causes high cholesterol, and this is found almost exclusively in trans fat and saturated fat foods. It is these foods that cause high cholesterol. Some examples of foods that are high in saturated fat (and therefore, high in bad cholesterol) include red meat and dairy (specifically, butter and whole milk and cream). This causes your blood to pump a little harder, clearing out the bad cholesterol from clogging up your arteries.
